5th LEARN & CONNECT SEMINAR IN THE LEIDEN BIOSCIENCE PARK -NETHERLANDS
Written by: Mohi AhmadiniaA Day of Science-Driven Collaboration to the Forefront of Bioprocessing
The 5th Learn & Connect Seminar, hosted by Securecell AG on April 1, 2026, successfully brought together scientists, engineers, and industry professionals at the BioPartner Center in Leiden for a full day of knowledge exchange on the future of upstream bioprocessing. The event focused on digitalization, automation, and advanced analytical technologies shaping modern biomanufacturing.
The seminar was held as a full-day program, reflecting the growing interest in data-driven bioprocess technologies and the expanding Securecell community in Europe. With around 55 participants, the event featured a dynamic mix of scientific presentations, hands-on demonstrations, and interactive discussions — all centered on the question of how to make bioprocess development smarter, faster, and more connected.
A particular highlight was the live demonstration of Securecell’s Numera 3 autosampler and Lucullus process information management software at the Biotech Training Facility (BTF). This hands-on session showcased the power of automation and real-time data integration in modern bioprocess environments, sparking lively discussions on the opportunities for digital transformation in upstream processing.
Behind the scenes, the success of the seminar was made possible by the dedicated efforts of Mohi Ahmadinia, Rowin Timmermans, and Martijn Verschuren, who ensured smooth organization and a welcoming atmosphere throughout the day. Their meticulous preparation, together with the enthusiasm of our partners and sponsors, created an event that was both informative and inspiring — reaffirming Securecell’s commitment to advancing bioprocess innovation through collaboration.
A Day of Insight and Exchange
The seminar featured a series of insightful presentations covering a wide range of topics:
- Ramon van Valderen, PhD Candidate, Delft University of Technology
Presented on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling in bioreactors, demonstrating how simulation tools can support process optimization and scale-up strategies. - Dr. Jana Langenhan, Team Lead Bioreactor, Euroimmun
Showcased automated feeding strategies using Lucullus PID control based on real-time glucose measurements, highlighting practical applications of closed-loop control.
After a short coffee break, participants headed to the Biotech Training Facility (BTF) for a guided tour and a live demonstration of Securecell’s Numera 3 and Lucullus systems. This hands-on session was one of the day’s highlights, allowing attendees to see firsthand how automation and digitalization come together in real-world bioprocessing scenarios.

Following lunch and networking in the afternoon session, the sponsors had a chance to present their company and their products.
After the program continued with insightful presentations:
- Angel Zwager, Fermentation Scientist, Bionomic
Discussed simplified methods for kLa determination in small-scale bioreactors, enabling efficient and reproducible oxygen transfer characterization - Paa Kwesi Ogoe, Bioprocess Scientist, Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult
Shared perspectives on implementing Industry 4.0 concepts in cell and gene therapy, including challenges and opportunities in integrating PAT and digital tools. - Dr. Simen Akkermans, Postdoctoral Researcher, KU Leuven / BioTeC+
Introduced the FooDSIM platform, an advanced automated system designed to simulate gastrointestinal conditions and support microbiome-related research.

The day concluded with an informal networking session over drinks and snacks, providing a relaxed atmosphere for further conversations and new partnerships to form. The energy and enthusiasm in the room reflected how much value participants found in the event.

What Made This Event Stand Out
A full-day program enabling deeper interaction
Extending the seminar to a full-day format allowed for richer engagement throughout the event. Attendees benefited from having more time to exchange ideas, explore demonstrations in detail, and reflect on the content. The well-paced agenda — combining presentations, guided tours, and networking sessions — was widely appreciated.
High-quality technical insights with practical application
The speaker sessions delivered comprehensive coverage of current bioprocessing advancements, ranging from process analytical technologies and modeling approaches to automation and data-driven analytics. A strong emphasis was placed on real-world implementation, highlighting how digital solutions are actively shaping both academic research and industrial operations.
Well-executed organization and strong team coordination
The Biopartner Center, located in the Leiden Bio Science Park, proved to be an ideal setting for the event. The Securecell team ensured flawless execution across all aspects, including logistics, catering, and technical arrangements. Their attention to detail and professionalism were consistently reflected in positive attendee feedback.
Positive momentum and future opportunities
Beyond the immediate knowledge exchange, the seminar contributed to strengthening Securecell’s network within the bioprocessing ecosystem. It sparked new business opportunities, collaboration prospects, and increased interest from potential sponsors. Notably, several participants expressed enthusiasm about actively contributing to future editions, underlining the event’s growing influence.
